Local Values, Global Communication: Managing Different Values
Systems in Dynamic Knowledge Communities
David Snowden, Director, IBM Institute for Knowledge Management,
UK
In any organisation there are many cultures and associated value
systems which may or may not conform with the official mission
and objectives. In international organisations and partnerships
this is further confused, and enriched, by national and ethnic
variety. All this gives rise to significant problems in communication
and knowledge transfer in which common use of an international
language such as English is still largely ineffective due to
the failure to recognise the different cultural context and
history of all parties. The presentation will seek to identify
major issues and possible solutions to these problems. It will
draw on five years of research and practice with international
organisations (Industry, Government and NGOs), and will also
look at pragmatic examples of stimulating "just in time" knowledge
transfer. |
